![]() This week was a hard week with the first week of school, a meet and everyone being tired, a little dehydrated, and figuring out their sleeping schedule. The meet went well even though everyone was a dragging a little from getting up early for school. The middle school boys did really well with Joe, Quinn, and Wyatt placing one, two, three respectively, with Carter finishing 11th and Dylan 12th to have the boys team finishing first with 29 points. The middle school girls also did really well with the team taking 3rd finishing behind Red River and Devils Lake. The JV boys placed 5th with Alejandro being the first finisher for the JV boys in 11th placel. The JV girls ran awesome, with Maria Kroeber finishing 4 her highest placing ever, and the team took 1st in the JV division! The Varsity boys placed 3rd even with some of the top 5 from last meet not be able to run because of injuries. Because of this, we had to have some of the other runners for Varsity stand up, especially Ethan running his first cross country race and placing 23rd.The Varsity girls team took first putting 4 of their top 5 in the top 10 at the Northwood meet! I would say that it was a successful week and a great meet! Ryan Meyer - Freshman - Captain It's been a tough week for everyone, now that school has started. Sleep schedules were off and everyone was tied up with homework from the new year. Everyone still did really good at practice and it showed in our race on Thursday. Northwood is a tough course with multiple hills and everyone handled it very well! A couple of our runners either placed for the first time or won their first race! Annika Green who won the girls sword placed for the first time ever!! She works so hard and it was great to see her succeed from all the hard work. Alexis Roehl won her first race and so did Joe Williamson. Ethan won the boys shield for having a great first race after being at soccer practice all week long. The JV girls won their first race this year, the varsity girls came with a win again, and the boys varsity team placed very well considering we didn't have all of our top runners.
Overall I'm so happy with how everyone did and how everyone is handling the season so far. This week will be another good week and we get ready for West Fargo on Saturday! I'm excited to see what we can do! Brenna Bartsch - Senior Captain This has been a very busy week and I thought the whole team did a great job working hard, and having a great first meet. The week started out with two different speed workouts on Monday, Elmo run for the younger ones and 800s for the older ones. Everyone did a great job and it was fun to see how much some of the girls and boys have improved from just the first meet! Our next speed workout was on Thursday, and the whole team got to do 3,2,1's. We practiced running up the dike, and although it was difficult some of the younger girls and boys showed initiative and fought through it. We then had a pasta feed at my house(the Roehls) and it was great to see everyone there! On Friday we started getting ready for the meet, by our individual coaches talking to us about our race strategies. The coaches really stressed running in packs, and just to have fun at the first meet of the season. On Friday night we had a movie night at the Berry's house that the athletes and the parents got to go to. We watched McFarland USA as some pre-race motivation. At 8 AM sharp we were in the bus heading off to Hillsboro for out first cross country meet of the season. Although a lot of people had never raced before, they all did very well. Marie Deren and Hannah Hynek both placed in the top 20 of the middle school division which is very good considering both had never ran a xc race before! Keirstyn G. and Madison Eldon almost got in the top 20 being 21, and 22 respectivley. In the middle school boys division Quinn Roehl got his first win and Wyatt M. was a top 10 finisher also. The girls varsity team went 1,2,3 with Rachel Torrey(with her first ever cross country win!!)Alexis Roehl, and Mikayla Weiss respectively. Lauren Harrison had an outstanding race getting 9th place! Sophia Roehl barely missed placing getting 21st. On the boys varsity side Ryan Meyer had a great race with a 12th place finish and Eric Olsen also secured top 20 by placing 19th. Joe Williamson did great considering he was asked to run varsity the day before! The girls middle team placed 4th, the boys middle team 2nd, girls varsity won our first meet of the year, and the boys varsity got 3rd! Overall it was a very successful week and first meet of the year. I am excited to see what we can do later on in the season!
Alexis Roehl , Jr, Captain This last week has been an exciting one. It started off with a speed workout on Monday. Some of the younger kids went to University Park and got do Elmo Run while some of the older runners went to Riverside for 800 repeats. Although a couple people had a tough time they powered through and the workouts were a success overall. On Tuesday the team went on a normal run down Belmont and we all stopped to sprints up the sledding hill. The next day had beautiful running weather-- cool and cloudy. It was perfect for our long run which we completed on the four-mile loop. Thursday was when the week really started to get fun. The team ran to Riverside and we practiced pack running during our second speed workout of the week. After that, everyone gathered at the Roehl’s house for a team pasta feed where we hung out and each ate our weight in spaghetti. Then on Friday we had another normal run down University and afterwards everyone drove over to Lincoln. Once there, the boys played games like Magic while the girls made bracelets and anklets to wear to the first meet. Later that evening, a bunch of us met at the Berry’s house to watch McFarland, USA. Saturday was by far my favorite day. Everyone showed up early for the bus which was pretty impressive. On the way to Hillsboro we exchanged words of encouragement, snacks, and goofy toys through secret sister and undercover brother gifts. Upon arrival, we set up camp and walked the course. For many people on our team, it was their first cross country race and they did really well! I couldn’t be more proud of how our team competed and how strong everyone already looked. Just about everyone I asked said they had a good race and a lot of them have new personal records to prove it. This meet was a great way to kick off the season and set a really good tone. I can’t wait to see how the team grows over the next couple of months! Rachel Torrey, Senior, Captain After such a great 3 months of summer running, I'm not even surprised that our first week of official season has been a big success! On Monday we got some new faces, but already I feel like they've been part of the team forever. I can tell that this year's team will be especially tight-knit! Monday was hot, making the workout difficult for our less-hydrated athletes, but they'll be drinking water now! This year, we've shortened our warm-up from half an hour (or more) to fifteen minutes, which is going well. On Thursday, we did Run Bike Run, which is a speed workout at Lincoln Park on a course a bit longer than a mile. So many people had amazing times! Alexis Roehl almost qualified (keep in mind, this is on hilly grass and pavement without racing spikes!), her sister, Sophia, was running at the pace of our top 3 runner last year, and Kierstyn had absolutely impressive times for someone so new to running! Many others had similar successes. For some, this week was more about pushing through. Maria was sick all week with a cold that seemed to get worse instead of better, but she showed up every day and worked her hardest, which made me proud to be her teammate. This year, I already see us as a threat to any team who stands in our way, and I can't wait to see how we grow and improve. Thanks for a great week!
-Maia Jackson, Senior, Captian Monday August 14th was the start of the 2017 Cross Country season! It was a big day for some new runners, marking the very first day of being apart of a new team and new sport. We had some new faces that looked a little nervous but by Friday it seemed like everyone was smiling and having a good time! On Monday it was a hot start with some 80 degree weather that even tests some of the top runners, but we don't have to worry about that for long because as we all know, we do live in North Dakota! We had two speed workouts this week with one on Tuesday which was running 1000 meter repeats, we had some younger boys show off some of their speed and toughness. Then on Thursday we had run bike run at Lincoln Park. That is where you have a partner that runs a mile and a partner that bikes a mile, then you switch and keep doing the mile loop. It was a good test to see how hard some of the newer runners could push themselves. But most importantly after the first week everybody started to get into a routine of stretching before and after practice. Most fun of all is we got to learn how to ice bath to help keep the legs in shape and ready to roll!! I think we would call the first week of season a success, with many more to follow! Adam Arnold, Freshman, Captain Coach Eric Polries won the 106 miles race through the Badlands of ND in 28 hours 7 minutes. It was the second year of running portion he Maah Daah, the race also has a bike competition. Coach orginal started riding his bike in the competition for two years, before switching to running it. This year 7 people started. Congrats to Coach Polries!!!
Thursday is always one of my favorite days of the camping trip. It started with our annual Frisbee Football Tournament. Several new runners earned the bragging rights of being champs for another year! Then everyone returned back to camp, gets their run in and get dressed up for our night out in Bemidji. Our group of 37 quickly filled up our favorite pizza place in Bemidji. Everyone enjoys the eating out, then driving to see the course around Lake Bemidji where our long run will take place Friday morning. Next the team headed out to enjoy the air conditioned comfort of watching a movie. Friday is the final challenge of the camping trip, the run around the lake. Its a very coordinated effort for everyone to pick up the runners at different locations of 5, 7, 8, 10, and 12 mile markers. It was a lot of fun to see so many of the runners push themselves to run further than they ever have. It was another great week of camping and everyone had a blast.
The second day of camping has been flying by with fierce games of kick ball! Also everyone has been busy with giant jenga, cube, card games, swimming, and playing frisbee. Tuesday at the camp fire everyone discussed someone that has inspired them. It was great to hear them share stories of how their parents, siblings, and teammates have all pushed them to work harder in their lives. Everyone has been eating their fill of pancakes, french toast, pineapple, strawberries, and pasta! We are even celebrating a birthday on the trip, Zac turns 13, his grandparents were nice enough to bring cupcakes for everyone to enjoy!! Later today we will have our second speed workout of the camping trip, our relay race from the campsite to the shore of the lake. Tonight at the campfire we will be discussing our individual and team goals for the upcoming 2017 Cross Country Season. GO Knights!!!
The 2017 Annual Cross Country camp has started out well! We have the youngest group ever with a large number of 8th and 9th graders in our group of 33 runners. Everyone is finding their way around the camp site, learning the running trails, and learning the ropes of team camp life. Each of our runners has to help cook meals, clean up, and help out with a lot of different camp activities. Tuesday morning we have our volleyball tournament down on the shore of Lake Bemidji. Last night at our camp fire we talked about how we define tradition, commitment, and discipline and afterward of course had S'mores.
