Last week was a really really big week for our team. Had some tough speed workouts as we got ready for two really important meets in our schedule. On Saturday 10 varsity girls raced at the Roy Griak meet, one of the best known college/high school meets in the country. Against a very tough field on an insanely muddy and hilly course we were able to pull off a 15th place finish our of 49 teams, beating all other North Dakota teams that were there including Davies and Bismarck high. This was good practice for when we get to more big meets soon, like state and Nike regionals.
While we were in Minneapolis, the rest of the team was only about an hour away at the Milaca Mega Meet. With the course being equally as muddy and still hilly, the team had a lot of fun racing at the largest high school cross country meet in the nation. Since the conditions weren't ideal, PRs were hard to come by but we still had a few people who were able to do it! Next week will be a little bit more of a relaxing week with not having to travel for a meet, since we race at home. It should be exciting to see what everyone will be able to do on our home course! Karly Ackley, Senior Captain This past week was filled with hard speed workouts and a race in Bismarck on Saturday. Everyone was working hard to prepare for the meet with an especially hard speed workout on Tuesday with 600’s at end of year race pace. Another speed workout of 400’s and 800’s at first mile pace and goal pace followed on Thursday. Reduced mileage followed on Friday to help prepare and get the runners well rested for Saturdays meet. The boys did well and fought hard. A few boys came out of Bismarck with new PR's like Eric Olsen, Chris Demuth, Jake Hanson, Alejandro Puckett, and Emmett Sum. The varsity boys came out with a 9th place over 16 teams, JV had 9th out of 14 teams, and Middle School finished 4th out of 9 teams. Very proud of Ryan Meyer and Adam Arnold for coming up to race varsity and running hard. Chris Demuth also had a big race with a PR and came in first for centrals JV team. Varsity girls had a great race with Karly Ackley, Alexis Roehl, and Rachel Torrey finishing 1st, 4th, and 5th. Mikayla Weiss came in 32nd overall. Rachel Hatcher finished 44th and saw her first top 5 appearance. This helped Varsity claim first over 15 teams, JV took 4th out of 9 teams and Middle school claimed 7th out of 8 teams. The girls did great and had a good amount of PR’s. This coming week our top girls are headed off to Roy Griak for a very competitive race with a lot of national ranked teams and the top teams from the midwest. The rest of the team in going to the Milaca mega meets bright and early at 4:45. We wish everyone good luck in their upcoming meets and can’t wait to see the results. Senior Captain Aaron Springer Last week was a fun week where some of the team got the chance to go to two different meets. The first meet we went to was on Thursday in Grafton. The majority of the people who ran were middle schoolers and they did an amazing job! In the middle school girls race we had four in the top 5 and got the team win. Lauren Harrison got her first win as well which is super exciting! The middle school boys did just as well with 4 in the top 15, they got the team win as well and in individual winner of this race was Ryan Meyer with his second win in a row! We had two girls who ran in the varsity girls race Maia Jackson placed 18th and Hannah Thorpe who was Grafton’s sword winner for the girls.
The second meet of the week was the Nike Heartland Pre-regional meet. It was an early morning as we had to be on the bus by 5 am but it didn’t affect the team at all and you could see that in the way that we competed. The top 5 for both the boys and girls PRed which shows how hard both teams worked. There were also a bunch of people who ran 5Ks for the first time and kicked butt. I am so proud of everyone for a really great week. This was the start of a run of tough races with Bismarck and Milaca/Roy Griak coming up where we will have to continue to work very hard to do well! Go Knights! Meghan Allan - Senior Captain Sometimes your team does things that never show up on the scoreboard that make you more proud of them than anything they could do on the field. We try to instill in our athletes to treat everyone well, that they are always representing our team and school, and that you never know who might watching you. Today the team received a "food gift" for that behavior by Teresa, the custodian who takes care of the GFC gym area. She took at moment at practice to tell the team that they have always treated her well, that they make her feel special, and they do a great job representing the Central Tradition. She then gave the team a post run treat of watermelon, peaches, apples, and cuties. Thank you Teresa!!
Today I was more proud of our athletes than any race they could ever win. Coach Allan Great competition and weather helped Central runners produce 16 personal records! The Yankton course is the same one that we will return in the fall for the Nike Heartland Regionals. The girls varsity race was the first race of the day, the top teams in the field were Willimar, ranked #2 MN & #7 in the nation and Minnetonka #5 MN. The Central Girls held their own finishing just behind both teams for 3rd place. Karly Ackley lead all finishers into the finish chute posting the 4th fastest time on the course at 17:21.69, which is also good enough to be the 7th fastest time in the Nation!! Posting PR along with Karly is Alexis Roehl (5th 18:30), Rachel Torrey (8th, 18:50), Sophia Roehl (34th, 20:50), Sijle Kindseth (41st, 21:06), Mikalya Weiss (42nd, 21:07) and Rachel Hatcher (21:53, 49th). Also PRing for the girls in the JV race was Valerie Doze (18th, 22:16).
The boys went out and ran their best race as a team so far by placing 5th overall! Richie Osborn had his best race of the year good enough for a 5th place and a PR of 16:27. Other boys earning PR's are Aaron Springer Following our meet on Monday we had a nice week of training, with no complaining as our long run was on Wednesday in the heat of the day. We had a good, challenging speed workout on Thursday with a mixture of 400's at first mile pace, and 800's at a pr pace.
On Saturday we had a very successful meet in West Fargo. It was a small meet with only a few teams. It was a fun meet to watch as a lot of the younger runners won their first awards. It was a really windy day, it was difficult to hit pr's, but we still got a few. It was fun to see everyone improve and have fun racing. For the girls Karly Ackley led the girls with a 1st place finish, Alexis Roehl in 2nd, Rachel Torrey 4th, making the top 5 for the first time Sijle Kindseth 12th, Sophia Roehl 15th, in her first top twenty appearance, and Lauren Harrison came in 19th. For the boys Richie Osborn led the team with a 3rd place finish, Aaron Springer 10th place, Kohlton Peterson in his first top twenty finish came in 11th, Emery got his first top twenty finish as well with a 16th place finish, and Eric Olsen with his first top 5 appearance just missed top twenty with a 21st place finish. It was fun to see the boys come together to come away with a 3rd place finish. It was also fun to watch the girls get the job done as well, with another 1st place finish. The middle school boys showed that the Knights have great future with a 1, 2, 3 finish by Ryan Meyer, Adam Arnold, and Joe Williamson respectfully. Also placing in the top 20 were Wyatt Mutzenberger 8th, Jake Hanson 10th, and Drew Raymond 18th. - Senior Captain Kohlton Peterson |
